There's a real sense of '60s retro glamour in the new winter hairstyles, discovers ILSA CUNNINGHAM.
As the colder weather starts to arrive, it's time to think well-kept winter hair.Gone are the messy, dirty, summer locks, replaced by a neat, well-groomed look that is typical of the 1940s and '50s.Wollongong hair salon M-Hair's creative director Michael Bozina says the winter trends are simple, yet effective.Think Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and high-society New York in the '60s, and you're right on track.Bozina says the winter hair trends are in keeping with a "polished" look, evident when the shirts and coats come out of the wardrobe.High ponytails that are bouncy, healthy and fall into an S shape will beat the winter chill. Actor Anne Hathaway has already wandered up the red carpet with this style at the Oscars.A chignon at the nape of the neck or top of the crown will also see you through winter."Less is more," Bozina says. "It's more about the total look. Make-up and hair complement the outfit but do not override it."The Marilyn Monroe look will also prove a winner, so borrow your mum's hot rollers, and curl away."It's old school, Hollywood, and has a certain glamour to it," Bozina says.If you're thinking of having a chop, then think about a bob. It's still hot, Bozina says, and combined with a heavy fringe, you'll be ready to take on anything. He says styles are moving away from the wispy side fringe sported by Posh Spice, towards the square, thick, blunt version worn by actress Katie Holmes. But beware - this style requires a high-level of maintenance to keep it looking sleek and sexy.If you want to be warm in winter, you have to take your hair colour into account. That means ditching the light and airy summer colours for a warm mocha, chocolate, blueberry or carrot hue, or an apricot or icy blonde.Men too should be giving up their scruffy summer look, for a well-groomed style, such as the wide side-part and slicked-down cut sported by George Clooney.Go for the clean-cut, traditional short, back and sides, leaving some length on top to comb it to the side, the hairdresser suggests.Bozina gleaned the latest hair and fashion trends when he was styling models for Melbourne Fashion Week earlier this month. He helped get the models' hairstyles in order for several Australian designers including Camilla and Marc, Jayson Brunsdon, and Leona Edmiston. In between creating the perfect look, he was busy checking out the fashion. He says a black patent belt, bag or shoes, are winter's must-have accessory, and for guys, a black trench coat with white shirt and grey jumper is the way to go.He says black is winter's hottest colour, teamed with a splash of bright green or pink, and grey with maroon."Make something unique, be individual. Turn it into something that works for you," he says.
